Hey, I'm finally getting around to building a table. My problem is that it will have to be stored in the basement (oh the humidity!) so I've gone the mdf route and the thing weighs a damn ton. I'm going to be down in the back from carrying it upstairs let alone actually playing it!
I bought a nifty folding table that has adjustable heights to hold it, about 40 bucks at Sams Club (might be one at WalMart). The adjustable height is great as I can put it on the lowest setting to play with my 5 year old son or raise it up for adult competition (and no, not that kind of "adult competition").
Anyway, I've scrounged up the primer, paint, and varnish so I should be good to go, just have to claw out some time soon to put this puppy to bed!

Good luck Rory. I have 5 of those things, and I am now lucky enough I don't have to haul them up and down the stairs Post some pics when it's finished ;D

Yes please, post some pics! In CT we all have the same folding tables, about the same price at BJ's. I love them.

I have primed and painted the base (not the sideboards yet) and put one coat of varnish on it. As I said over in the Denver forum, it's going to be a Colorado Rapids/MLS themed table. Wal-Mart now sells "paint samplers" where you can get some higher quality paint in a little bottle about the size of those old Apple brand acrylics for less than $3. That provides an easy splash of color in something a little more durable than acrylic (although I'm sure most people just varnish over he acrylic).
Man that mdf soaks up the primer and paint when you're painting the edges!
My only issue now is that I'm reduced to hoping my table under it is short enough that I can put in my Biemme goals and the posts that go through the table won't hit the table! If that doesn't work I'll have to use some plastic old subbuteo goals until I buy something else!

I look forward to see the final result!

Congrats on the new table. I was so anxious to complete mine to only have nobody to play once my flicking partner lost interest. Now it sits collecting dust. I hear ya on the mdf...my 3/4" pitch is a heavy sumbeach.

Okay, I've painted the board and varnished it, which made it have that slightly yellow look as I was varnishing over white. So my question is, what could I do to the sideboards to protect them but not turn them yellowish? Also, I plan on doing some decal work on the sideboards, would the varnish eat this off or would that spray stuff for decals protect it from the varnish?
