On average, yearly we provide $350 to the host of the Nationals, but usually expect $300 back, so the net outgo is $50 there, plus a similar amount for the team finals, and the same return, so we have about $100 out a year.
When we had the Nationals in Virginia, we got sponsors to cover the venue. Generally costs for tournaments are $2 to ASA, $3 for trophies, and whatever is charged for food per day ($5 or so) if it is costed out in advance. The tournament I am holding in MD next weekend we charge $20 because we have to eat at the venue, and that is the deal we cut to basically cover their cost for food, tips, and space. They let us in before they open, so they make some money on us, but it is cheaper than the cost they normally charge. When WTSL hosted Nationals we proposed the $300 be ASA contribution for hosting each year, but were told we had to go through the board and nothing happened after we asked about it.
There was some complaint about charging $20 for that because there is some obscure practice about not charging more than $10, but venues cost. Paul was also concerned about the kids not having the money to play, but I think that could be addressed on a case by case basis since most of the kids could probably afford to pay more and thus the money could go to getting a venue.
The hardest part of hosting a tournament is not knowing how many people will show up since if it costs to host you can be stuck if you end up getting too few participants. Thus most peopel host at homes or free sites.
