Congratulations to Steven for his win.
Just a quick question, on the throw in; were you not waiting for the defensive flick of your opponent?
Impressive tournament well done to Mike for the perfect organization.

www.mistfa.org/tournaments/flickodemayo/2013/A fantastic day's play at SpeakEZ Lounge in Grand Rapids, where a state record 17 flickers showed for the latest ASA/WASPA tournament. Steve Laskey of Cleveland Ohio, despite hobbling around the table recovering from a broken foot, crept into the second round, didn't win a game in the quarter-final group and ended up taking home the trophy! Ten players from the Grand Rapids area were joined by East Lansing's Peter Alegi and Ann Arbor's Eric Walton, making a return to tournament play after a few years' absence. Peter Sexton and Stephen McNab from Hamilton Subbuteo Club across the border in Ontario, Chris Sweetland of Chicago and Brandon Minton from North Carolina but originally Detroit joined Steve Laskey in adding a strong out of state flavour to the tournament. In the first round, Peter Alegi and Peter Sexton made it out of Group A without breaking a sweat. Group B was a bit tighter, Eric Walton didn't concede a goal but most games were close. Mike Ewer edged Brandon Minton out with a narrow 1-0 win. 14 year old from Rockford Michigan, Nathan Pate, emerged from Group C without conceding a goal, but a gutsy performance from venue proprietor Eric Albertson earned him a 0-0 draw in their first game. Group D looked to be a tough group when it was pulled out. Chris Sweetland from Chicago was very much the unknown quantity having played in the cereal bowl era and recently returned to the game. Paul Pate finished on 10 points with an excellent 0-0 with Steve Laskey, whose final game was against Sweetland. The Chicagoan led 2-1 at half time, which would have given Pate the group and knocked Laskey out. But some rock and roll in the second half put Laskey into the quarter-finals as group winner with a 3-2 final score. For the second round, the top two qualifiers met in another round robin. Groups A and D were paired together, as were B and C. Players from the same group carried their head-to-head result into the second round. Group E started with Alegi on 3, Laskey and Paul Pate each on 1. Group F started with Walton and Nathan Pate each on 3. While all games in this round were close, the round robin nature of the format didn't affect who would reach the semi-finals as all group winners held their spots in the final four. Despite a 3-0 defeat to Eric Walton, Nathan Pate edged out Mike Ewer on goals scored. In the consolation bracket, Eric Albertson received byes into the final by player withdrawals. Brian Lambert had a much tougher path into the final, edging Michael Knorr in the quarter, and taking Brandon Minton to a shootout after an extra five minutes couldn't split a 1-1 draw. He won the shootout 2-1. In the final, Lambert edged "EZ" 1-0. The Campeonato semi-finals saw Peter Alegi hand Nathan Pate a taste of his own medicine with a 4-0 win. In the other semi, Eric Walton and Steve Laskey split two goals in a minute to enter an extra 5 minutes. During the additional period they split another two goals and went into a shootout. Laskey won the tense shootout in the final pair of regulation shots, 2-1. Michigan's other hope Peter Alegi, unbeaten on Michigan pitches going into this tournament, did not have his best performance and came up against an inspired Steve Laskey. Two goals by Laskey sent the trophy to Cleveland. Michigan doesn't respond well to defeats to Ohio and he will have to battle twice as hard next time he crosses the state line.

Alex, I believe that was a heat of the moment slip, unless you saw multiple instances. I did see it happen near the end but it was let go by the opponent, probably to keep the flow of the game.

For what I see from the results I want to congratulate Brandon for the law scoring conceded against players like Mike Ewer and Eric Walton, your baggage of playing experience is growing and soon you will be able to do even better.....
Again you are a blessing for our Association and we missed you already big time in Tampa.

Brandon was close to reaching the quarters, I got a lucky goal against him. Although he needed to win that game, it was still very much possible in a tight game. I was surprised that he drew with Brian in the consolation round, but at his own admission he's not the most attack minded player which perhaps suited Brian in this case. I think the game against Brandon was the one I enjoyed the most all day.

Alex and Mike, thanks for the kind words. I actually had my best shot of the day against Brian. I worked my way up the right side, took aim, and chipped the ball beautifully into the back of the net, one of thise perfect chips. Kudos for Brian playing me offside! I failed to notice that he pulled his last defender forward. It's the occasional shots like those that keep me going. I can get the kind of shots that I've seen Alex, Paul Eyes and the many other great players I have seen, I just need to practice to become more consistant. Between my delivery job, working on the farm and trying to get my photography business up and running in NC, I don't foresee too much improvement this year. Hopefully in 2014 I'll have the time to try and grow Subbuteo in my area so I can get more games in besides my once a month with Craig. Alex, I have to admit, I'm a little sad seeing an upcoming Tampa tournament that I won't be a part of. I had a great time playing with you guys down there.
